Major Appliance Repair

Appliances can roughly be classified into two: small appliances and large appliances. A major appliance, which is also known as domestic appliance, usually refers to a large machine which helps in some routine housekeeping task, including as cooking, preserving food, or cleaning. But large appliances are limited to the home, they are also used in institutions, commercial spaces and industries.

Major appliances differ from plumbing fixtures because they electricity. Major appliances differ from small appliances in that they are large, quite difficult to move, and are generally fixed to one place. As such, they are also considered fixtures and can be part of a real estate property. They are often supplied to tenants as part of their rent. There are many types of major appliances, including refrigerators, freezers, stoves, microwave ovens, washing machine; clothes spin dryers, air conditioners, and water heaters.

Owing to their size and usefulness, major appliances are invariably more expensive than small appliances. When a major appliance is malfunctions, a major appliance repair is in order. But sometimes this is not always the best option. So when should you repair or dump your major appliance? There are two things you should consider. First is the cost of repair against the purchase price of the appliance. Second is the age of the appliance.

In general, if the appliance is still covered by warranty or is relatively new, you should go for repair, because oftentimes the cost is capped at around 50% of the purchase price. However, if repair costs will almost equal the cost of buying a new unit, then consider your appliance one for the dumpster.

When you decide on repairing your appliance, the next thing you need to do is to find a professional repair technician. If you have some technical knowledge in repairing appliances, you can always do it yourself. However, if you only know a little of it, never attempt to do it yourself. Having little knowledge is dangerous for your appliance.

There are many places where you can find professional appliance technicians. You can go to the appliance manufacturer’s office and ask for referrals, but most often they’d have in-house technicians who can help you. That said, one of things that you should consider in evaluating which brand to buy is the after-sales service of the manufacturer.

If a service center is not available in your area, you can always go to the store where you bought the appliance. In all likelihood, the staff would have some on-call technicians whom they could refer to you.

Another popular way to find an appliance technician is to visit referral appliance repair service websites. It’s like the Amazon of professional appliance technicians. With these sites, you’ll get access to information, including the names of professional technicians. You will also get to view customer ratings given by other people who have used a particular technician’s services.

In choosing a technician, make sure that that person is qualified to do a major appliance repair. Check his trade certifications and licenses.
