Canada Refrigerator and Freezer Repair – repairing appliances throughout Canada

What is the most common problem with Canadian frost-free refrigerators? In three words: water leaking out.

A water leak problem often leads to puddles of water forming in the refrigerator’s bottom of as well as on the floor in front of it. While it may seem strange for a frost-free refrigerator to leak water, it does happen, and there are some explanations for it. Frost-free refrigerators actually go through a periodic defrost cycle. The blower goes off, the compressor goes off, and a heater comes melts the frost off the evaporator coil, resulting in water running down a drain is located at the back of the freezer under covers.

The only problem is that when the freezer has not been kept clean, debris can get under the covers and block the drain. When this happens, the water backs up, freezes and then builds up. Eventually, the built-up ice reaches a point where, when the defrost cycle comes again, the water does not drain and instead runs out into the refrigerator portion. Some brands often used in Ottawa or Calgary, are more well-known than others for this kind of problem. Mid sized Kelvinators and White-Westinghouse refrigerators are particularly prone to this problem, although this problem has been seen in other brands.

To solve this problem, you need to take the covers off inside the freezer. Chip out the ice, and clean the drain.

Some people have been successful at wrapping a copper wire around the heater in the freezer and directing the end of the wire down the drain. The idea is that the copper wire will divert extra heat to the drain’s opening during the defrosting cycle, thus preventing the formation of ice around the drain. Also, the wire sticking down into the drain prevents objects that have been floating through the vents (like onion skins, or small pieces of paper or plastic) from covering the freezer’s drain and blocking it.

Now if the problem with your refrigerator is not water leak, follow these steps to do a refrigerator repair.

1. Try diagnosing the problem yourself by checking out what is wrong with the refrigerator. Describe it in terms of what you see. For example, is the water leaking and forming a puddle on the floor in front of the refrigerator? Are the refrigerator coils being cleaned?

2. Take out the user manual of the refrigerator as well as it warranty card. If it is still covered by warranty, take your refrigerator unit to the service center. Take note of the details of your refrigerator’s problem so it would be easier for the repair man to diagnose your unit.

3. If your refrigerator is not anymore covered by warranty, check its user guide for any troubleshooting tips. Your refrigerator’s problem may or may not be as complicated as you thought, and you could probably fix it yourself.

4. If you cannot find your user guide, look for troubleshooting information on the Internet. Just make sure you are searching for the exact model of the refrigerator. And do not ’t limit yourself to text web pages, try to look for troubleshooting videos.

5. Find replacement parts from online stores or offline stores.

6. Decide if you want to do the refrigerator repair yourself or you want a professional to do it.
